Narcissism

The narcissistic mother or father will make sure that he or she will be in the centre of attention. Children are a mere accessory to fill the void inside which is so characteristic for a narcissistic personality. If the mother (which is the narcissistic person here) has more than one kid, it is not uncommon that the children will be sorted into different categories: the scapegoat or the golden category. Scapegoat children are rejects as they do not fulfill any of the expectations the parent might have – golden children are far more adaptable to the needs of their parent, and will therefore be treated favourably. The outcome for the kids is ultimately the same as both are unable to be who they really are. The other parent is often absent  – either avoiding the family situation alltogether or being complicit with the narcissist.
