Henry VIII

Henry VIII (1491 – 1547) was one of the most notorious rulers of England due to his unpredictable, erratic personality. Friends could quickly become his enemies; some ended up under the scaffold . The same was true for his six wives: he divorced Catherine of Aragon, his first wife, and executed his second and fourth wife –  Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. In all three cases, they were “unable” to give birth to a son, something Henry VIII desperately longed for. Jane Seymour, wife number three, died in childbirth. She produces a son, who died at a young age. Anne of Cleeves, wife number four, was apparently too ugly. Henry did not produce any children with his last wife, Catherine Parr. Ironically, one of his female descendants, Mary I, the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, was the first recognized queen of England,  followed by her half-sister, Elizabeth I.
