Being a child in the post-war years could have meant growing up without a family. Children played amidst the ruins. Housing was difficult to come by – in London alone about 1.5 million people were made homeless by the ravages of war. Food rationing in the UK, which was introduced during the war, ended with the de-rationing of one last item, namely meat, in 1954. But there were also new beginnings in Greeat Britain: the NHS (National Health Service) – comprehensive health care for everybody, was introduced in 1948.
