1948 - After the War

Being a child in the post-war years could have meant growing up without a family. Children played amidst the ruins. Housing was difficult to come by – in London alone about 1.5 million people were made homeless by the ravages of war. Food rationing in the UK, which was introduced during the war, ended with the derationing of one last item, namely meat, in 1954. But there were also new beginnings in Greeat Britain: the NHS (National Health Service) – comprehensive health care for everybody, was introduced in 1948.
