The UK left the European Union in the year 2020. The result of the referendum in 2016 was tight – 52% to 48% with majority votes for Brexit in England and Wales, whilst most people in Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU. EU citizens and other non-British people, often residing and working in the UK for years, were excluded from voting in the referendum. As a result of the Brexit a lot of qualified non-British workers left the UK and illegal migration did not, as predicted, abate.
