Montsegur 16th March 1244

The Cathars were an ancient tribe who settled all over Western Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries. Their belief was that there are two Gods: the good God of Heaven and the evil God “of this age” – meaning of all the evils of this world. Their belief collided with the belief of the Catholic church; so Pope Innocent III initiated the prosecution and annihilation of the Cathars in the 12th century. In 1244, Montsegur, the home of the Cathars in the South of France, was conquered – after a long siege by the Catholic crusaders. All children, women and men were tortured and burnt at the foot of the castle. This historical event was to be one of the last “crusades” against the Cathars, who were soon wiped out after this event.
